On 8 May 2014, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, made a speech entitled "On Europe: Considerations on the present and the future of the European Union" at the Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany.
This was the contribution of the President to the debate about the future of Europe, as set out by himself in the State of the Union address 2013 and based on his experience and key lessons drawn from heading the EC over almost 10 years.
The key messages of his speech were: the need for further EU integration and joint action; legitimacy, democracy and governance; euroscepticism and ownership of the European project; coherence of the Union; and the need to perfect the Political Union – longer term institutional developments.
