Visit of José Manuel Barroso to Slovakia

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Bratislava where he received the State Award of Slovakia from the hands of Ivan Gašparovič, President of Slovakia. José Manuel Barroso then attended together with Robert Fico, Slovak Prime Minister, and Yuriy Prodan, Ukrainian Minister for Energy and Coal Industry, the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) enabling gas flows from Slovakia to Ukraine.
The Commission acted as a facilitator in the negotiations that led to this breakthrough. Along with this MoU, the gas pipeline operators concerned – the Slovakian company eustream and the Ukrainian company Ukrtransgaz - signed a Framework Interconnection Agreement, laying out the technical details of the foreseen solution.
The President eventually received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Economics in Bratislava (UEBA), from the hands of Rudolf Sivák, Rector of the UEBA.
