Tripartite Social Summit with the participation of José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, participated in the Tripartite Social Summit with Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, and Antonis Samaras, Greek Prime Minister and President in office of the Council of the EU.
In his speech José Manuel Barroso notably highlighted that high unemployment was still a cause for concern, and he urged trade union and employers' organisations (the social partners) to work together to strengthen Europe's recovery.
The theme of this Tripartite Social Summit, which was held twice a year, was "Rebuilding confidence in Europe: focus on job creation – lessons learnt and future orientations". The Summit took place just before a European Council meeting, where José Manuel Barroso met with the Heads of State or Government of the EU for talks on the economic recovery.
