José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Bohuslav Sobotka, Czech Prime Minister. It was the first visit of the latter since he took office on 17/01/2014. The President notably commended him and his government about the decision taken the day before to start the process of preparing the ratification of the Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance (TSCG), the so-called "Fiscal Compact".
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso added that the new government in the Czech Republic appeared to be ready to stand up for Europe and show to citizens that Europe could be part of the solution. He also appreciated the sincere commitment of Bohuslav Sobotka to their common project. They together agreed that the values of peace, democracy and freedom as well as the relevance of the country and the EU at global scale could only be preserved if they were working together through a strong and democratic European Union. They also exchanged their views on the situation in Ukraine during their meeting.
