Visit of Traian Băsescu, President of Romania, to José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Traian Băsescu, President of Romania. Discussions focused on the economic situation in Romania. The macroeconomic outlook had improved; the risks related to balance of payments had receded significantly.
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso highlighted that the EC remained strongly committed to supporting the necessary reforms in Romania through – amongst others – the Facility providing financial assistance for balances of payments and the Country-specific recommendations.
The two Presidents also discussed how they could best get EU funding to Romanian citizens and businesses by improving management and control. Good progress had been made in this sense but efforts had to continue.
José Manuel Barroso welcomed the fact that Romania made significant progress in many areas. However some concerns remained on the independence of the judiciary and on the implementation of anti-corruption measures. It was essential that a consensus was reached in continuing efforts to achieve the objectives of the Cooperation and verification report adopted by the EC three weeks before. The reform process had to be maintained, and the results achieved had to be consolidated.
