On 11 December 2013, the European Commission submitted the first calls for projects within the context of Horizon 2020, the EU Research and Innovation programme with a budget of 80 billion euros. This funding, over 15 billion euros of which are earmarked for the first two years, must contribute to giving fresh impetus to the knowledge-based economy in Europe and respond to the issues at the heart of the citizens’ lives. On 12 December, Maria-Cristina Russo, Director of the EC’s DG for Research and Innovation, and Wolfgang Burtscher, Deputy Director-General in charge of the divisions A, M and R of the EC’s DG for Research and Innovation, presented Horizon 2020 at an event to launch the programme hosted in Brussels. Furthermore, three grant recipients under the 7th framework programme of the EU were invited to give their testimonies.
