Visit of a delegation from the Cypriot government to José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and several Members of the College of the EC, received a delegation from the Cypriot government led by Nicos Anastasiades, President of Cyprus. José Manuel Barroso commended the latter, the Cypriot authorities and the Cypriot people for implementing the financial assistance programme with determination.
The EC welcomed the resolve of the Cyprus government and saw with satisfaction their efforts in implementing this programme. The latest assessment by the EU and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) showed that the financial assistance programme was largely on track, but that risks remained. Fiscal targets were being met and important reforms were being rolled out. But it was essential to keep up these efforts to provide a new basis for future sustainable growth in the country.
One of the top priorities for Cyprus was to reduce high levels of unemployment, particularly youth unemployment. European Union funding had a key role to play here, and in the overall recovery of the Cypriot economy. The extra 200 million euro agreed as part of the EU budget 2014-2020 for Cyprus would help the country invest in energy efficiency, support SMEs and create jobs, including by contributing to the funding for a youth guarantee.
