José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Ulaanbaatar where he met with Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, President of Mongolia, and Norovyn Altankhuyag, Mongolian Prime Minister. It was the first visit of an EU high representative to the country. 2013 has been an important year in the development of EU/Mongolia relations. Discussions focused on the progress achieved so far in areas as trade, development cooperation, agriculture, research and innovation and political dialogue. Furthermore the leaders exchanged views on regional and global issues. New areas of cooperation were also addressed. José Manuel Barroso reiterated the support of the EU to Mongolia's development through concrete ways to foster cooperation, for instance in the field of education, exchanges and also research and science. The President then delivered a speech at the National University of Mongolia (NUM) entitled "EU/Mongolia: Third neighbour and first class partner". José Manuel Barroso also visited the Gandantegchinlen Monastery.
