First "Frankfurter Europa Rede" by José Manuel Barroso

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Frankfurt am Main where he held the "First Frankfurt speech on Europe" (Frankfurter Europa Rede) entitled "Wir müssen reden, Europa!" (We need to talk about Europe!). During his speech he notably highlighted that the financial and economic crisis was a political stress test for the European community and that its solution would depend on first of all on the European leaders' political will. José Manuel Barroso also stressed that the EU was first of all a community of values and he reiterated the importance of subsidiarity and the EU's need to be "big on big things, and small on small things". This first Frankfurt speech ended by a ceremony where José Manuel Barroso received the paper "Impulses for Europe" elaborated by the Council "Hesse for Europe". The President then met with Volker Bouffier, Minister-President of the Land of Hesse, and Peter Feldmann, Mayor of Frankfurt am Main.
