Visit of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Chairperson and General Secretary of the National League for Democracy of Myanmar/Burma, to José Manuel Barroso

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Chairperson and General Secretary of the National League for Democracy of Myanmar/Burma, 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso highlighted that since November 2012 when he visited Myanmar/Burma, the historical changes in the country had continued and the relations with EU had expanded significantly – in particular with the lifting of sanctions and the reinstatement of the Generalised scheme of preferences. Myanmar/Burma was turning a page in its history and in the bilateral relationship with EU.
The President added that the EU was aware however that the way to democratisation was still incomplete and that more needed to be done. But the will was there and Myanmar/Burma deserved the support of the international community to continue with its political and economic reform process. José Manuel Barroso also said that the EU would continue to play a lead role in the international community in this respect.
