Open Days 2013: 11th European Week of Regions and Cities: speech by José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, participated in the opening session of the Open Days 2013, the 11th European Week of Regions and Cities entitled "Europe's regions and cities taking off for 2020". The President made the speech "A Europe looking to the future" (Une Europe tournée vers l'avenir) on Regional and Cohesion Policies on this occasion.
José Manuel Barroso notably encouraged the local and regional leaders to take part in the debate on the future of Europe. Recognising that the difficulties of the financial crisis should not be underestimated, the President also said that they should not be overestimated. José Manuel Barroso then called for perseverance, determination and creativity in tackling the situation.
The President also welcomed the strong focus given on urban issues. He then pointed to the new amount of 325 billion euros for Cohesion policy agreed in summer 2013, and he added that every euro spent from the European funds had to contribute to bring real, measurable results, which were being felt on the ground.
