Speech by José Manuel Barroso at the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to New York where he participated in the 1st High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) under the auspices of the 68th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
In his speech the President highlighted that poverty and environmental degradation were unacceptable. José Manuel Barroso said that the EU would continue supporting the critical work of this new Forum to integrate better the three dimensions of sustainable development. He then added that sustainable development should be at the centre of a better coordinated UN system.
The establishment of the 1st HLPF was decided at the Rio+20 Conference. It aimed to provide political leadership, guidance and recommendations for sustainable development. The Forum also would follow-up and review progress in the implementation of sustainable development commitments.
