Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa, held a joint press conference following the 6th EU-South Africa Summit that took place on 18 July 2013 in Pretoria, South Africa. This South Africa/EU Summit provided an opportunity to strengthen the strategic relation between the EU and South Africa and to discuss a number of key issues, in particular the South Africa/EU strategic partnership, key peace and security topics in Africa and beyond, but also global governance, climate change, trade, development issues, and the relations between Africa and Europe as a whole, as set down in the joint Africa/EU strategy. In the margins of the Summit, Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, and Ben Martins, South African Minister for Energy, signed the South Africa/Euratom Agreement for cooperation on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, including in research and development, setting up the overall framework for political, technical and industrial cooperation.
