On 28 June 2013, Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, was in Salzburg where she took part in an EU co-financed disaster exercise focusing on landslides - a major risk in Austria.
Nearly a thousand rescue workers were involved in the simulated disaster, called "EU Taranis 2013". More than half were from Austria's national organisations, with expertise in fire-fighting and water, cave and mountain rescue. Teams were provided by Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Netherlands, Romania and the Czech Republic.
The scenario for the exercise was that long-lasting massive rainfalls in the western parts of Austria, especially in the Province of Salzburg, led to regional floods, landslides, mudslides, rock-falls, combining with an extreme flood caused by mountain melt-water.
