Visit of Kristalina Georgieva to Jordan: 25/06/2013
On 25 June 2013, Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, and Emma Bonino, Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs, embarked on a visit to the camp of Syrian refugees of Zaatari, located in Mafraq, at the Syrian-Jordanian border. They visited a hospital and a school which had been recently refurbished. They urged on the need to maintain an open border policy for refugees and to coordinate all assistance closely with UN agencies and NGOs. During the visit humanitarian supplies provided by the Italian government were delivered to the refugees.
It is Kristalina Georgieva's second visit to the camp in recent months and her first since José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, announced an increase in EU funding to the crisis of €400 million. The Commission and the Italian government appealed for matching funds from other donors and followed up this initiative through a joint assessment mission with EU Civil Protection experts. Kristalina Georgieva and Emma Bonino then went to Amman where she met with Abdullah II, King of Jordan, and Nasser Judeh, Jordanian Minister for Foreign Affairs. SHOTLIST
