Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, made a press conference on 14 May 2013 in Brussels. She announced an additional 65 million euro of humanitarian aid in response to the rapidly growing scale of the humanitarian crisis resulting from the conflict in Syria. The additional funding will be spent inside Syria, to assist the more than four million people who have been forced to flee their homes, and in neighbouring countries that have generously welcomed some 1.4 million refugees. Emergency healthcare services will be provided as well as shelter, food, water, sanitation and basic household items.
