Statement by José Manuel Barroso on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, gave a joint press conference on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. The United States and the EU had decided to initiate internal procedures to launch negotiations with the aim of reaching this ground-breaking free trade agreement.
José Manuel Barroso underlined that a future deal between the world's two most important economic powers would be a game-changer because it would form the largest free trade zone in the world and as such it would set the standard – not only for the future bilateral trade and investment, including regulatory issues, but also for the development of global trade rules.
