José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Mario Monti, Italian Prime Minister and Minister for Economy and Finance. During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso welcomed the agreement on the Single Supervisory Mechanism as a flagship of the banking Union. He also praised the Italian government's reform efforts and the resulting credibility.
The two leaders also exchanged views on the situation in Italy. José Manuel Barroso praised Mario Monti and his government for Italy's ambitious reform agenda including significant measures to bring down the excessive deficit of the country and to tackle high government debt.
The President added that considerable progress had been made to improve the country's competitiveness and growth potential and also expressed his hope and confidence that Italy would continue on this path.
