Extraordinary Brussels European Council with the participation of José Manuel Barroso (2nd day)
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and the Heads of States or Governments of the EU met in Brussels for an Extraordinary European Council on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2014-2020, hosted by Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council.
After two days of discussions the Members of the European Council concluded that more time was needed to broker a deal on the next budget. During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso said that he understood each other's positions better. He added that from that point of view it was a real constructive debate. The President then emphasized that not only quantity, but also quality of the finished product was important and he explained the five benchmarks and one overriding goal for the EC, which was to modernise the budget so that it had an increase impact on creating growth and jobs.
