In 1992, the EU’s 12 member states created the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO) to provide assistance to those in need inside and outside Europe. Since then, ECHO, now the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection, has provided humanitarian assistance to millions of people affected by natural and man-made disasters in more than 140 countries. ECHO is the expression of the European solidarity with people in need all around the world.
