Connie Hedegaard - European Commission proposes modalities to reach the 2020 emissions targets for cars and vans

In the past three years legislation has been adopted introducing CO2 reduction targets for new cars by 2015 and new vans by 2017. These regulations already set a second round of targets for 2020. These goals are firmly set and agreed by European Parliament and Member States, and have created a clear and stable environment for investments in the European automotive industry. For the 2020 targets to take effect, the Commission will be presenting tomorrow the modalities of how these targets should be reached. The clear objectives of these proposals are: protect the climate, save consumers money and boost the innovation and competitiveness in the European automotive industry.
