Joint doorstep by Martin Schulz and José Manuel Barroso ahead of the European Council of 28-29/06/2012

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Martin Schulz, President of the EP, gave a joint press conference ahead of the European Council of 28-29/06/2012. José Manuel Barroso highlighted that it was very important that this European Council rules out any doubt about the irreversibility of the euro. He added that both short-term and longer term decisions needed to be taken.
He then outlined the three priorities of the EC for this Council: endorsement of the country-specific recommendations that have been proposed in the last European Semester, approval of the Compact for growth by the European Council, and the roadmap for the future of the European and Monetary Union (EMU). José Manuel Barroso thought it was critically important to have an understanding and that to go further it was necessary to work on a banking union, on a fiscal union and step towards a political union.
