Press conference by José Manuel Barroso ahead of the G20 Summit in Mexico
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, participated in the 7th G20 Summit in Mexico. During their joint press conference ahead of the Summit, José Manuel Barroso conveyed messages on results of Greek elections, deepening the economic and monetary Union as well as on his expectations for key items on the G20 agenda.
On the G20 priorities, the President outlined the EU positions and called on G20 leaders to make ambitious and responsible contributions to remove obstacles to growth. He emphasized the EU was sounding the alarm on the worrisome rise of trade protectionism and urged G20 partners to step up fight against protectionism, move forward on trade facilitation and strengthen the multilateral trading system.
José Manuel Barroso also underlined the EU progress on G20 commitments on financial reform and the reform of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and he encouraged G20 partners to follow suit. The President concluded with a strong appeal to continue to work on Financial Transaction Tax both in Europe and at global level.
