Visit of Brigi Rafini, Nigerien Prime Minister, to José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Brigi Rafini, Nigerien Prime Minister. During the joint press conference, José Manuel Barroso notably commended him for the exemplary democratic transition in Niger since 2011. The President also cited some examples of good practice in the field of cooperation between the EC and Niger, for example funding to several projects with a security dimension in the sector of Justice, with support to the Nigerien Internal Security Forces. The Commission had also initiated projects for the socio-economic development in Northern Niger.
José Manuel Barroso eventually said he was in favor of the "New Alliance for Food Security" which aimed to encourage the contribution of the private sector. The humanitarian and development aid in Niger exceeded the threshold of €100 million and the possibilities of strengthening the humanitarian aid to stabilize the situation until the next harvest were being studied because the needs were very important.
