Visit of Karim Massimov, Kazakh Prime Minister, to José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Karim Massimov, Kazakh Prime Minister. During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso stressed the importance of the bilateral ties between the EU and Kazakhstan, the only country in Central Asia with which the EU was negotiating a new enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA).
Trade relations were also discussed, including the EU support for Kazakhstan's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), as well as the importance of Kazakhstan as an energy partner of the EU. While referring to the impressive progress Kazakhstan had made since its independence, the President underlined the need for further political and economic reforms in the country.
