The year 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the European single market. On 1st of January 1993 internal border controls between EU countries were abolished and the single market - based on the free movement of people, goods, services and capital - became a reality.
Over the years, the Single Market has helped to create almost 2.8 million new jobs. But it still has a lot of untapped potential to make Europe more competitive. Today, a strong Single Market remains more than ever our greatest asset in facing the crisis.
This film was produced by the European Commission Representation office in Denmark during the Danish Presidency and gives its own concrete, festive – and slightly humorous – take on the anniversary. Also, in the film, Danish Minister for European Affairs Nicolai Wammen shares his vision for the Single Market.
