Visit of Igor Lukšić, Montenegrin Prime Minister, to José Manuel Barroso

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Igor Lukšić, Montenegrin Prime Minister. The discussions focused mainly on Montenegro's achievements on its EU accession path as well as next steps. José Manuel Barroso said that Montenegro had worked very hard on its EU agenda, in particular since December 2010 when it was granted candidate country status and Igor Lukšić took office as prime Minister. The President commended him on his strong leadership in this process.
He continued saying that Montenegro was in principle close to opening accession negotiations. It needed to run the final straight towards this ambitious objective. José Manuel Barroso also encouraged the Prime Minister to continue delivering further concrete results in these key fields, meaning the rule of law and fundamental rights, but also the fight against corruption and organized crime. In these areas, there was still significant work to be done.
The President was encouraged by the firm national consensus and the strong commitment of the Montenegrin people to move forward on the path towards EU membership. He concluded that Montenegro was on the right track and assured Igor Lukšić that the EC would continue to provide support to Montenegro at this crucial stage of the accession process.
