Visit of Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of South Sudan, to José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of South Sudan. During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso stated that Salva Kiir Mayardit informed him of the efforts that the government of South Sudan was undertaking to consolidate the independence of the country and build a stable and functioning state. He highlighted the EC was a longstanding friend of South Sudan and wanted to be part of the country's journey to stability and prosperity.
The President commended Salva Kiir Mayardit on the progress achieved so far in the talks with Sudan to resolve outstanding issues, in particular on citizenship and border demarcation. José Manuel Barroso urged him to continue his efforts to building a lasting and stable relationship with Sudan. He then added that the truth was that both countries – Sudan and South Sudan – were destined to live side by side. They had to do so in peace and harmony for the benefit of their peoples. Both sides had to show determination to find a negotiated solution to all remaining outstanding issues.
José Manuel Barroso concluded by stressing that the EC's commitment with South Sudan had not started yesterday and will not cease tomorrow. It was a partnership they wanted to build for the long haul. South Sudan and its people could count on the EU as a steadfast partner to build their future together.
