José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, Member of the EC in charge of Research, Innovation and Science, visited the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in the Ispra site with Dominique Ristori, Director-General of the the JRC. They also visited the European Laboratory for Structural Assessment (ELSA), and the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS), two of the seven scientific institutes of the JRC in Ispra. José Manuel Barroso and Máire Geoghegan-Quinn also participated in the opening of the European Crisis Management Laboratory. The President then went to Milan where he gave a lecture entitled "The European Commission and the governance of the Union" at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC)), in the presence of Franco Anelli, Vice-Rector Curate of the UCSC, and Massimo Bordignon, Professor of Economics at the UCSC. The President then met with Giuliano Pisapia, Mayor of Milan. On 17/03/2012 José Manuel Barroso met with Mario Monti, Italian Prime Minister; Minister for Economy and Finance ad interim, together with Lucio Battistotti, Head of the Representation of the EC in Italy. He then participated in the Confindustria conference. The theme was "Reforms by growth" (Riforme per crescere).
