Tripartite Social Summit with the participation of José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and László Andor, Member of the EC in charge of Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, participated in the Tripartite Social Summit. Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, and Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Danish Prime Minister and President in office of the Council of the EU, were also present.
During the joint press conference following the Summit José Manuel Barroso stated that the European Social Model and the social market economy in the EU were precisely about combining economic openness and dynamism with social fairness. He highlighted unemployment was the antithesis of social fairness.
The President then focused on youth unemployment by stressing that the common aim should be to give European young people a perspective and hope. He underlined it would be not tolerated that in some of the Member States a generation of young people was condemned to long-term unemployment.
He concluded saying that the dialogue with the Social Partners was more important than ever at that time. José Manuel Barroso also encouraged the Member States to work closely with the Social Partners to take the reforms forward.
