José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Hamburg where he visited the Elbphilharmonie building site with Barbara Kisseler, Senator for Culture for the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, and Nikolas Hill, State Counsellor for Cultural Affairs for the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
The President then made a speech at the Bucerius Law School in the presence of Manfred Lahnstein, Chairman of the Board of the "Zeit-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius" Foundation. José Manuel Barroso also visited the Town Hall with Olaf Scholz, Mayor of Hamburg.
He eventually made a speech entitled "A stronger Europe in stormy times" during its participation in the "Matthiae Mahlzeit" dinner. According to historical records, the "Matthiae-Mahlzeit" was first held in Hamburg in 1356 and was thus the oldest banquet still celebrated in the world.
