Visit of Demetris Christofias, President of Cyprus, to José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and the College of the EC hosted a delegation from the Cypriot Government led by Demetris Christofias, President of Cyprus. This meeting took place ahead of the first Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. Discussions focused on a range of issues mainly on the economic situation, both in Europe and in Cyprus.
During the joint press conference José Barroso underlined that the priority for 2012 was to strengthen the potential for growth and competitiveness. They also discussed is the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) because it would be during the Cypriot Presidency that the negotiations on the financial perspective for the next period (2014-2020) had to be concluded. José Manuel Barroso continued expressing his concern about the youth unemployment situation. He also thanked Demetris Christofias for the support the Prime Minister gave already in the European Council to the priority that the EC gave to youth unemployment and also to the support to SMEs.
Settlement process and relations with Turkey were also addressed.
