Visit of Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, Somalian Prime Minister, to José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, Somalian Prime Minister. This meeting took place ahead of the international conference on 23rd and 24th of February 2012 in London which should provide an opportunity for a step change in the security situation and enable political progress in the country.
During the press conference José Manuel Barroso reaffirmed to the Prime Minister the European commitment to continue assisting Somalia to restore peace and stability. He also pointed out that the EU was the lead donor to Somalia, with €415 millions allocated for 2008-2013, for funding activities on governance, education and economic development. The President added the EU was also the biggest supporter of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and underlined that the EU was also heavily engaged in supporting security in the country and the wider region, jointly with the African Union.
