Inauguration of the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU with the participation of José Manuel Barroso (2nd day)
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Danish Prime Minister and President in office of the Council of the EU, participated in the inaugural meeting of the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU with the EC.
On the first day during the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso emphasised that Denmark could be a bridge between the euro area and non-euro area Members and praised the pragmatic approach and European commitment of Denmark.
At the end of the visit the President stressed that the Presidency and the EC fully agreed that fiscal discipline and sound public finances were indispensable for Europe. This discipline was indispensable but growth was also necessary. He underlined that the structural reforms boosting competitiveness and measures enhancing growth were as important as putting the public finances in order to restore confidence.
The President and the Prime Minister also visited the exhibition on Europe's relations with the world entitled "Europe meets the world" in the National Museum of Denmark.
