Visit of Lucas Papademos, Greek Prime Minister, to José Manuel Barroso

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Lucas Papademos, Greek Prime Minister. José Manuel Barroso congratulated him on his appointment and stressed that the agreement to form a national unity government, backed by a broad political consensus, was a vital signal of the need for political stability in Greece at this crucial time.
The President added that the political determination and resolve were more important than ever to enable Greece to stay the course towards economic reform and renewal. He also reiterated the EC's commitment to helping Greece, adding that there were two essential objectives. Firstly, a second programme of financial assistance to Greece for 2012-2015 had to be concluded by the end of 2011. Secondly, the voluntary bond exchange with private sector investors should take place at the beginning of 2012.
