Black Sea

The Black Sea fishery resources have been shared by Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia Federation, Ukraine and Turkey. About 16 million people live in coastal cities and majority of this population belong to Ukraine and Turkey. In case of Black Sea fish production, Turkey is the lead country (342,455 tonnes, in 2008). In Romania, the production in 2008 was 1,824 tonnes and in Bulgaria, 2,843 tonnes. In Romania, sea fishing, conducted along the Romanian coastline, is limited to the marine areas up to 60-meter isobaths, as a consequence of the characteristics of the vessels and their limited autonomy. Romanian fleet operates up to 30–35 marine miles out in the Black Sea. Trawl fishing has a seasonal pattern and is linked to the presence of the fish in the areas. The near-shore area of the Black Sea coast up to 20m isobaths is out of limits for fishing vessels that use towed gears. Fishing activities are limited to the utilisation of fixed rods and nets. The small-scale coastal fishing fleet is composed of 417 boats made of wood or fibre, 200 of these being equipped with low power engines. This type of boats does not use towed gears, but use static gears: long line, bottom line, gill nets and traps. The average age of this small-scale fishing fleet is about 15 years. The main species targeted by this fleet are small pelagic (sprat, anchovies, whiting and turbot). The number of the fishers involved in this activity is around 500.
