Demand for steel in Europe dropped by a further 8-9 per cent in 2012 and is now 29 per cent below pre-crisis levels. In this downturn, world's largest steelmaker Arcelor Mittal is closing a coke plant and six production lines in Belgium hitting 1,300 jobs.
A High-level Roundtable on the future of the European steel industry has been convened by Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Industry and Entrepreneurship, and László Andor, Member of the EC in charge of Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, in order to discuss measures to help the industry survive the current crisis, to keep production capacity and employment in the EU as far as possible and to issue concrete recommendations to maintain its competitiveness.
