On 31 December 2010, a couple of hours before the adoption of the euro, Estonian people spent their last coronas. At midnight, Estonia became the 17th member of the euro area as well as the European Capital of Culture 2011. Lots of festivities were organised for this special occasion in Tallinn. Andrus Ansip, Estonian Prime Minister, was the first official to withdraw euro notes in a cash dispenser, followed by Olli Rehn, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs.
