Slaughter of Cattle

Since 1985, the EC veterinary inspection service, in conjunction with the competent national veterinary authorities, has inspected some 1200 slaughterhouses in the Member States. Every year a further 300 slaughterhouses are inspected in non-EC countries which export meat to the European Community. These inspections cover compliance with standards regarding organisational structure, equipment, maintenance, hygiene of the operations and veterinary supervision (Directives 64/433/EEC and 72/462/EEC). To enable all categories of staff in the sector to benefit from its many years of experience, the EC veterinary inspection service has produced three video-cassettes on the slaughtering of cattle, pigs and sheep.
