Foreign Affairs Council, 3183rd meeting: extracts from the press conference by Catherine Ashton

On 23 July 2012, Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, held the final press conference of the Foreign Affairs Council, in Brussels. On this occasion, she announced that the Commission doubled its humanitarian aid to the Syrians. Ministers also agreed to strengthen the enforcement of the EU arms embargo against Syria. The EU Members States will be obliged to inspect vessels and aircrafts heading to Syria if they suspect the cargo contains arms or equipments for internal repression. The assets of three additional entities will be frozen bringing their total number to 52.
