EMI briefing "The consequences of the Economic Crisis for the European Social Model": keynote speech by László Andor
On 8 May 2012, László Andor, Member of the EC in charge of Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, gave a speech on "The consequences of the Economic Crisis for the European Social Model", at the Norwegian Mission to the EU, in Brussels.
The European Union has been struggling through a financial crisis that resulted in economic reforms and the application of austerity policies in Europe. The crisis and the policy changes it has caused have had tremendous effects on the European Social Model. In several countries, unemployment has reached unprecedented levels, especially among the youth. While some claim for more austerity, protests by citizens and trade unions are growing. The employment package launched by the European Commission on 18 April 2012 seems to show a shift from one-sided austerity measures to new incentives for growth and jobs creation. SHOTLIST
