European Citizens' Initiative: time to act!: press briefing with the participatin of Maroš Šefčovič
On 30 March 2012, Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Inter-Institutional Relations and Administration, met in Brussels with Mercedes Bresso, President of the Committee of the Regions (CoR), Georgios Papastamkos, Vice-President of the EP, and Staffan Nilsson, President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), to promote the European citizens initiative (ECI).
On this occasion, they participated in a press briefing and answered journalists questions, highlighting their privileged access to European citizens and the importance this gives them in making this process a success.
The ECI enters into force on 1 April 2012 and, from that date, one million citizens from all over Europe can come together around an issue they consider important and ask the Commission to act.
Making European citizens aware of this new tool is the biggest challenge ahead for the EU institutions. A very large majority of citizens are unaware of its existence. The European Commission is intent on reconnecting the EU with its population and improving interactions between them. That is why the CoR and the EESC are determined to act as intermediaries through their national, regional and local entities. SHOTLIST
