Extracts from the EC Midday press briefing by Michael Mann, Spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, on Russian ship carrying arms passing by Cypriot waters to Syria
On 13 January 2012, during the EC Midday press briefing, Michael Mann, Spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, answered a question on Russian ship allegedly carrying arms which passed through Cypriot waters to reach Syria, while an EU embargo on arms had been agreed by the Members States.
In response to the continuing brutal suppression of popular protest, the European Union agreed on sanctions on 10 May 2011. It placed an arms embargo on Syria and established a list of Syrian officials banned from travelling to the EU. In September 2011, the EU extended the scope of economic and political sanctions against Syria's regime banning its imports of crude oil.
