2011 Innovation Summit: extracts from the speech by Viviane Reding on "Delivering justice for growth and stability"
On 6 October 2011, Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, took part in the 2011 Innovation Summit. She presented a forthcoming proposal on a single EU law, aiming at unleashing the potential of the single market by giving more legal certainty to consumers and merchants alike. If adopted, this proposal will for the first time give small- and medium-sized companies real access to the EU's almost half a billion consumers, thereby increasing competition among providers and empowering consumers by giving them a wider choice of suppliers. Despite the success of the EU's Single Market, barriers to cross-border trade remain. Many of these result from divergent sales laws between the 27 Member States. They make selling abroad complicated and costly, especially for small firms. SHOTLIST
