Extracts from the press conference by Janez Potočnik on "The 2020 biodiversity strategy"
On 3 May 2011, Janez Potočnik, Member of the EC in charge of Environment, presented the new strategy to protect and improve the state of Europe's biodiversity over the next decade. The strategy included six targets which addressed the main drivers of biodiversity loss, and which would reduce the main pressures on nature and ecosystem services in the EU by anchoring biodiversity objectives in key sectoral policies. The global aspects of biodiversity loss were also addressed, ensuring that the EU contributed to combating biodiversity loss around the world. The strategy was in line with the commitments made by the EU in Nagoya, Japan, last year.
