"What future for milk?" Conference: extracts from the speech by Dacian Cioloș

On 26 March 2010, Dacian Cioloş, Member of the EC in charge of Agriculture and Rural Development, attended the conference on 'What future for milk?' 2010. The recent crisis in the dairy sector led to questions about the future viability of this sector. In this context the European Commission established a High Level Group (HLG) with the purpose of discussing mid-term and long term arrangements. In addition to the discussions within this HLG, the European Commission wanted to consult more widely, and this conference formed part of that wider consultation. The following issues were discussed at the conference: the contractual relations between milk producers and dairies, transparency for the benefit of milk producers, dairy industry and consumers, innovation and research with a view to render the sector more competitive.
