EU Ministers for Justice have reached an agreed on the regulation for maintenance or spousal support obligations designed to simplify collection and make life easier for European citizens. Rachida Dati, French Minister for Justice and President in office of the Council, explained that, for example, a sentence which is delivered in Spain will be directly applicable in France without having recourse to complicated legal procedures. "This can be done now very quickly and very efficiently, to the benefit of the children involved on those cases", she added.
There was also a political agreement on the establishment of a European Criminal Record Information System, which would be indispensable for the effective interconnection on the criminal records of the 27 Member States. Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Justice, Freedom and Security, explained that the EC is going to provide the software for the interconnection and will work of a procedural manual with technical specifications.
