Conference 'Cities of Tomorrow: Investing in Europe'

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC in charge of Regional Policy, participated in the conference "Cities of Tomorrow: Investing in Europe" (CiTIEs). This conference brought together important figures in urban policy to plot the way ahead for a new EU Urban Agenda.
Johannes Hahn participated in the the first session of the conference hosted by Eurocities and the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) at the Berlaymont building. He then chaired a meeting with Mayors of EU Capital Cities before he made the opening speech, "The voice of cities must be heard", of the CITIEs' conference at the Charlemagne building.
The day after Günther Oettinger, Member of the EC in charge of Energy, joined the meeting for a panel discussion on "Cities and Business".
With more than two thirds of Europeans living in cities, the meeting was designed to explore and debate ways to give cities a greater prominence when it came to European policy, to make sure the needs of cities were better understood, and policies were more co-ordinated. It aimed to highlight the key role cities could play in achieving wider European goals like tackling climate change, unemployment and social exclusion.
