Visit of Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC, to Romania

Johannes Hahn, Member of the EC in charge of Regional Policy, went to Bucharest where he met with Victor Ponta, Romanian Prime Minister. He then went to Calafat where he participated in an historic moment between Bulgaria and Romania, and the neighbouring regions of Vidin and Calafat, when he attended the inaugural opening of a bridge linking the two countries. During the event, Johannes Hahn was accompanied by Rosen Plevneliev, President of Bulgaria, and Plamen Oresharski, Bulgarian Prime Minister, as well as by Victor Ponta.
The recently named ‘New Europe Bridge’ received 106 million euro in EU investment and is only the second bridge along the countries' 630 km border. It is of vital strategic importance for the EU: a key link in a route that could stretch from Northern Europe, the Baltics, through Central Europe, Romania and Bulgaria, and eventually, to Greece.
The New Europe Bridge, formally known as the Calafat-Vidin Bridge, forms an essential part of the EU's priority road and rail transport corridors, and is expected to radically reduce the travel time for passengers and freight between South East Europe, Turkey and Central Europe.
Johannes Hahn then visited the site of the innovative technology project "LASER ELI-NP" project in Magurele. The visit was an opportunity to discuss with other Ministers and political representatives the implementation of structural funds under the current financial framework as well as the preparations for the forthcoming funding period.
