Participation of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, in the farewell ceremony for Jean-Claude Trichet, President of the ECB
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, participated in the farewell ceremony for Jean-Claude Trichet, President of the European Central Bank (ECB). Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, and Jerzy Buzek, President of the EP, were notably present. In his statement José Manuel Barroso underlined that the euro was one of the major achievements of the European project and that it defined European integration. He added that many have contributed to this, but the European Central Bank has been centre-stage throughout its development. The President described Jean-Claude Trichet as "a man of intellect, a man of vision, but also a man of action, who has played a decisive role in defending the independence of the ECB and strengthening financial stability." He welcomed Mario Draghi, President of the ECB as from 01/11/2011, adding that both he and the ECB would retain the full confidence of the EC. Just a few days ahead of the crucial European Council meeting of 23/10/2011, José Manuel Barroso used the opportunity to discuss the EC proposal for a Roadmap to Stability and Growth with key interlocutors in the margins of the event.
